The developers of the resort community of Seaside, Florida, wanted to build a city where its inhabitants could have all the pleasures and necessities of daily life within walking distance of their homes. They created the kind of town where you can go to slow down the pace of your life. This is a rare concept for the 21st century, yes. But doesn't it sounds magical?
The Hollywood film "The Truman Show" was shot almost exclusively on location in Seaside. A few fake structures were added and a few buildings were modified for the shooting, but the magical quality of this community is what drew the "Truman" producers to this town.
Seaside is an example of what is called a "New Urbanist" development. It has been cited as the first of its kind. The community has been used as an example for other developments of its kind in both the United States and abroad. If you are interested in architecture, be sure to check out Melanie Taylor's website, linked below under Other Links & Information. Melanie Taylor, along with another architect named Robert Orr, was hired by the town planners to design the buildings and housings for the development.
